Welcome to Mayurbhanj Law College
Legal education assumes importance both from a professional and non professional perspective for the success of Constitutional Government in a pluralist democracy like India It is necessary to have widest participation of the people in the process of law making law enforcement and legal adjudication knowledge of law and the legal process by the people is a SINE OUA NON for responsible Government and for the preservation of human rights and freedoms. Along with the proliferation of laws, there has been a steady increase in Governmental Institutions and adjudicator agencies. The growth of legal profession in the last three decades has also been phenomenal. In contrast to the traditional role in dispute settlement lawyers have come to assume a wide variety of function in policy formulation legislation administration business planning, social welfare international relations and diplomacy.
Viewed in this perspective the Mayurbhanj Law College, was established on 22nd Octobers 1978 to provide legal education in this tribal and backward region of Odisha.
The Mayurbhanj Law College is located at a distance of 5 kms. from the city of Baripada and expanded in an area of 5 acres at Takhatpur with the I.T.I. College-on the east, Mayurbhanj Ayurvedic College and the B.Ed. College on the West, a beautiful mango groove and the North Odisha University on the North and vast paddy field on the south the college has all the basic infrastructure of its own. The college building was inaugurated by Sri B:N .Pande the then honorable Governor of Odisha on 13th April, 1987 The college has adequate land in its name for development of its play ground, construction of hostel and other infrastructure.
The college has been permanently affiliated to the North Odisha University since 2002. The College is being managed by the Mayurbhanj Law College Governing Body which is duly approved by D .H.E. Odisha, Bhubaneswar.
Presently the total students strength is 480. Besides the Principal, the college has 5 whole time lecturers (as per UGC norm) who have specialized in different branches of Law. Senior members of local bar association are appointed as part time lecturers. The college provides ample scope for the realization of the academic pursuit of the students and teachers. The students who have passed out from this college have distinguished themselves in bench, bar and academics.
Since 1980-81 the college has been selected by D.G.C. to receive financial assistance under 2(f) of Ll.G'C. Act, 1956 and receiving and for its development. The University Grants Commission has introduced remedial coaching for the scheduled castes and Scheduled Tribes from the session 1996-97.
The College provides ample facilities for development of an integrated personality, cultural and sport activities are conducted and other function are conduced by the principal under the direct supervision of the teaching staff. Bank and we subscribe 15 types of National & International journals.
The college has achieved the distinction of being the university Runner-up in the Inter College Football Tournament, inter college Volley Ball Tournament, Inter College Badminton Tournament and in Inter College Cricket Tournament. The college has a good library containing more than 10000 book in general library, 15000 books in the Book Bank and we subscribe 15 types of National & International journals.
In order to provide free Legal Aid and Advice to the weaker section of the community as to create a legal consciousness among the people a legal Aid Society has been formed in the year 1982-83. Under this there is a free legal aid clinic. The Legal Aid Society has taken up the programs such as promoting legal literacy and creating legal awareness amongst the poor, the deprived and exploited sections of the community by organizing legal aid camps in the rural area.
The college has also a unit of N.S.S. having 50 volunteers in its roll, under the supervision of a programs office. This organization concentrates its work mostly in the field of mass literacy environmental projects, AIDS awareness and national integration programs.
A Seminar society has been formed in the year 1997-98.The object of the society is to organize various seminars and participation of students and teachers at various state, national and international seminars.
The college awards each year a number of prizes to the students for their outstanding achievements in academic and other cultural activities.
The present Governing Body of the Mayurbhanj Law College with a dynamic spirit is trying its best to provide all the new possible facilities to the students which will help them in their studies.
